Helga decided to take up dancing after visiting Cuba in 1999. She e- mailed a friend at home and said "your job is to find a latin dance class that I can start when I get home". Her friend found Le Bop and the rest, as they say, is history.
Helga loves teaching Le Bop to beginners, particularly those who never thought they'd be able to dance - because she was also one of those people!
Helga has performed in team routines "Somebody to Love" (1st, Melbourne 2005); "Joy" (1st, Melbourne 2004); Charlies Angels (Melbourne & Sydney 2003); Abba (Sydney 2002); "Renegade" (1st, Melbourne 2001), and "Shake your Body" (with around 25 other couples from Melbourne and Brisbane in 2000); . She has also competed freestyle (with Jason Horlock), triples (with Sandra and Ariel; then BBD and Ariel) and Bent Bop (with Steph Glickman - placing 2nd in Le Bop Comp 2003).
Helga tries to get to a dance class whenever she travels and has been to classes in Sydney, Brisbane and Auckland. She looked up classes in Russia but couldn't find any so had to teach them there herself! She has also done an African drumming and dance course in Ghana in 2005.
By day, Helga is an official of the Australian Services Union and one of her proudest moments is managing to combine her day job with her dance teaching job - teaching a dance class at a stop work meeting at Qantas Call Centres in September 2002!
Other strange locations Helga has been found Le Bopping:
* on a train station in Siberia, Russia
* next to a broken down jeep in the back blocks of Mongolia
* on the harbour bridge (yes, on TOP of the harbour bridge!)
* outside the Opera House in Sydney
* at a union management course at Currawong, north of Sydney
* at various rallies and marches
* at various dance parties in Melbourne and Sydney (and one in Budapest too!)
* at a pub in Paraburdoo (Pilbara, WA)
* With Asanti Dance group in Cape Coast, Ghana, West Africa
* Anywhere else she gets a chance!
At Dance Camp 2003, Helga tried a tap class and made it one of her New Years Resolutions to give tap a go too! She's now got new tap shoes and is having a great time learning how to dance and make lots of noise at the same time.
